This 4-week class is for dogs who are social with other dogs — please don’t register if your dog doesn’t get along well with others (consider private lessons or a leashed class)! !e will review and focus on just three basic, but imperative, skills: Wait, Stay, and Here! For our purposes, these skills are defined as:
Wait: dog remains where they are, ready to be released or called. For doorways, cars, corners, and anywhere the handler just wants their dog to hold on a a few moments.
Stay: dog remains where they are indefinitely. Handler will always return to the dog, not call them. For leaving dog in place while carrying on conversations, moving around the home or yard, and any situation in which we need our dog to hold position for long periods of time, or under high levels of distraction, especially when we will be far away.
Here: dog stops whatever they are doing, and comes to handler. This will be a formal recall. Alternate cue words are fine, but only if they have no history of failure.
We will be in close quarters and spending a little time off leash. Not appropriate for dogs who don’t get along well with others! Overly friendly is fine — impulse control is what we are working on. Unless weather is terrible, we will work both inside, and outside — even if it sprinkles!. Please bring appropriate clothing!
equipment: 6 foot leash (not retractable), harness or flat collar (harness preferred) with no moving parts, 100+ small yummy training rewards, fanny pack/treat pouch/or other way to get rewards out very, very fast. Pockets rarely work for this! Speed matters!
All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations.
